Lawyers, traders, journalists, and citizens demands justice as protests erupt against brutal crime

Abbottabad was gripped by anger and grief as civil society members, political and religious leaders, and lawyers took to the streets to protest the horrific rape and murder of 13-year-old domestic worker, Iqra. The rally began at Jinnah Chowk and stoped at the Abbottabad Press Club, where a press conference was held. Protesters demanded that the accused be made an example of, ensuring justice is served.
A committee, headed by MPA Ameena Sardar, was formed to oversee the case and ensure it reaches a logical conclusion. Among the speakers at the protest were KP Assembly member Ameena Sardar, Advocate Faiza Malik, former Tehsil Nazim Ishaq Zakaria, Jamiat Ahle Hadith leader Maulana Sarfaraz Farooqi, former traders’ leader Nasir Khan Jadon, Press Club President Sardar Naveed Alam, and other prominent figures.
Speakers warned that anyone obstructing justice for the minor girl would not be tolerated. They also called for a social boycott of those providing legal aid to the accused and urged lawmakers to pass stricter Sharia-based punishments for crimes against children. Legal and social support for the victim’s family was pledged to ensure justice is delivered.
The victim, Aqra, worked as a maid in the house of Shahid Latif in Habibullah Colony for a monthly wage of Rs. 8,000. The accused, Haris Latif, allegedly took her to Ayub Medical Complex late Friday night, where doctors confirmed her death. Shockingly, he then brought her body back home, only for the crime to be discovered the next day. A post-mortem report from DHQ Hospital confirmed sexual assault and brutal violence.
Police arrested Haris Latif and obtained a six-day physical remand. DIG Hazara confirmed that the suspect’s DNA samples had been sent for forensic analysis, while a special investigation team expanded the probe to include his parents and sister. Authorities have vowed a thorough and transparent investigation amid growing public outrage.
