21 coalminer from Shangla lost lives in July

Lack of safety measures in mines leads to multiple fatalities; calls for stricter regulations grow

At least 21 coalminer from Shangla district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa lost their lives in separate coalmine incidents in the month of July.

According to the data compiled by Shangla Coalmine Workers Association and The Northern Post, 21 coalminer, mostly youth lost their lives at their workplace during the month of July.

The coalminer died in different parts of the country’s mines. The incident occurred in Dara Adam Khel of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and parts of Balochistan, Sindh. The dead bodies were buried in their ancestral graveyards.

According to Abid Yar, spokesperson for SMWA, the incident took place due to the negligence of mines owners, management. He says the management of coalminer did not follow the guidelines and operate vulnerable mines without the authority’s permission. He said unless and until safety is not ensured such incidents would always occur. On Wednesday, 4 coalminer died and several others injured and two of them are critical.
