Solar boom in Pakistani citizens; a challenge for government
Solar energy was less than 2% in 2020, but in 2024, this energy mix increased to 10.3%

The people of Pakistan are fed up with increasing inflation and long load shedding and have started adopting solar energy, which has brought a silent energy revolution. The revolution that began with the rich people has now reached the poor people.
Solar energy was less than 2% in 2020, but in 2024, this energy mix increased to 10.3%. According to Global Think Tank Ambers, this percentage increased to 24% in 2025, which is higher than gas, coal, nuclear, and hydropower energy. Pakistan has a target to reach up to 60% in renewable energy by 2030.
However, increasing energy use has created some issues for the Pakistani government. The reduction in national grid users has increased the pressure on electric transmission companies to borrow up to $8 billion in loans. The government has enforced a 10% tax on solar panels to deal with this issue. However, it has also been decided to reduce the price of additional solar power purchased from consumers.
Entrepreneurs adopting solar energy said that this move is based on injustice. Hamad Noor, a safety equipment manufacturer in Sialkot, adopted solar energy in 2023 and called it the best decision for his business. He expresses his disconnection from policymakers and the business community.
Experts say that this trend of solar energy is the result of government failure. The electricity crisis has forced the public to look for alternatives, but now grid stability is in danger. When consumers again get attached to the grid in the evening, it increases the need for electricity, which in turn increases the pressure on the grid system.
