Islamabad traffic police crackdown leads to 15,760 challans within a week

Enforcement drive begins ahead of schedule: Ctizens face heavy fines and vehicle impoundments.

A crackdown initially launched by the ITP Islamabad Traffic Police against the traffic violation was announced on 7 October, but it’s enforcement actions had begun as early from October 1, targeting both motorcyclists and car drivers.

Approximate figure that is quoted by ITP spokesperson, between October 1 to October 7, a total 15,760 challan were issued. These challan included 7,717 against the motorcyclists and 8,043 against the other vehicles, which resulted in the fine worth of Rs. 13,57 million during this period.
ITP issues challan on citizens including lane violation, non-standard number plates, double riding, driving without license, not wearing seat belts or helmets, and underage driving.

According to official data released in 2025, 124 road accidents have been recorded so far, in which 72 involved motorcyclists, accounting for a 95% fatality rate. The main cause of accidents is the wrong way driving, particularly along the Islamabad Expressway.

The traffic police announced a drive in which case against unlicensed and underage drivers are registered, who do not comply with legal provisions. Also the ITP spokesperson told that during the past week on the behalf of police action, 4,015 motorcycles and 477 vehicles were taken into custody, 41 FIR ere registered, 57 underage drivers along with 144 unlicensed drivers faced legal action.

The spokesperson added that following the launch of the campaign applications for driving licenses have surged by over 500%. In just five days authorities issued 114,484 new and renewed licenses contributing Rs223.7 million in revenue to the government.

Both locals and tourists from other areas have experienced severe disruption as a result of the early start of the crackdown, hefty fines, and vehicle impoundments, despite these attempts to update Islamabad’s traffic system to meet international standards. The “overzealous implementation” of the new campaign has angered and alarmed many individuals, despite their support for tougher enforcement.
