Malakand devastating flood claims 321 lives, leaves Buner worst hit
Commissioner Abid Wazir reports 321 fatalities, extensive damage to homes, agriculture, and infrastructure
Commissioner of Malakand Division, Abid Wazir, provided a detailed briefing on the devastating flood of August 15, stating that district Buner was most severely affected by the cloudburst at various locations, while Swat and Shangla were also significantly impacted.
While giving the brief about the data on the loss of life and property, he said that during the flood, 321 people died and 176 were injured. Presenting the estimate of damages, he said that 300 houses were completely destroyed and 280 were partially damaged. Almost 1700 shops were also damaged. The agriculture sector was severely affected, where more than 63,00 acres of agricultural land were destroyed and more than 600 livestock died.
Commissioner Malakand has also stated that rescue institutions, the District Administration, and other welfare organizations have played their best role in coping with the flood situation. The Chief Minister and the Chief Secretary also provided support at every level. Most of the connecting roads were restored in three to four days at their orders.
While highlighting the relief and rehabilitation works, he said that more than 150 pieces of machinery are working in different places, and 90% of the work is completed. In the initial two days, electricity and water were completely disrupted. On the third day, work on restoring them began, and now 90% of the electricity is operational.
The commissioner stated that data on damages is still being collected, and 90% of the surveys have been completed. Soon, the assistance checks will be distributed to the affected individuals. He also said that because of narrow roads, they are facing difficulties to transferring machinery, but the situation is in control.
