Army Chief Asim Munir promoted to Field Marshal for war leadership

Historic promotion recognizes military leadership in repelling Indian aggression during Marka-e-Haq conflict; Air Chief's tenure also extended

Pakistan’s federal cabinet on Tuesday approved the promotion of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir to the rank of Field Marshal, the highest military honor, in recognition of his exceptional leadership during the recent Marka-e-Haq conflict and Operation Bunyan-ul-Marsoos. The move, unanimously endorsed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s cabinet, marks the first such elevation in decades and underscores the military’s decisive victory against an unprovoked Indian aggression in May 2025.

The cabinet cited Army Cheif Asim Munir’s strategic brilliance, operational command, and unwavering defense of Pakistan’s sovereignty as key factors behind the promotion. His leadership was pivotal in repelling the enemy, safeguarding civilians, and securing territorial integrity during the intense conflict, which saw Indian forces target innocent women and children. The resolution praised the armed forces for their resolute response and lauded the nation’s unity in the face of adversity.

In a parallel decision, the government extended the tenure of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu, acknowledging his critical role in the war effort. The cabinet also announced plans to confer state awards on military personnel and civilians who contributed to the operation’s success.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif briefed the cabinet on post-war security dynamics and later consulted President Asif Ali Zardari on the historic promotion. The move has been widely hailed as a tribute to a “soldier-statesman” who steered Pakistan through one of its most challenging crises, reinforcing national pride and global credibility.
