A strong westerly wave is expected to approach the western parts of Pakistan on Monday, bringing widespread rain and snowfall to various regions across the country. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather alert, predicting significant precipitation from February 24 to March 2, with potential risks of flash flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.
Under the influence of this weather system, Balochistan, including Quetta, Ziarat, Chaman, Mastung, Pishin, Qilla Abdullah, Qilla Saifullah, Chagai, Noushki, Kalat, Khuzdar, Barkhan, Harnai, Zhob, and Musakhel, is expected to receive rain and snowfall from February 26 to 28. In Sindh, light rainfall is anticipated in Larkana, Qambar-Shahdadkot, Jacobabad, and Sukkur districts on February 25 and 26. Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir are likely to experience widespread rainfall and snowfall in hilly areas from February 25 to March 2, with occasional gaps. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will see widespread rain and snowfall in mountainous regions from the night of February 24 to March 1. Meanwhile, Punjab and Islamabad can expect rainfall and moderate to heavy snowfall in Murree, Galliyat, and surrounding areas from February 25 to March 1, with intermittent breaks.
The Meteorological Office has warned that heavy rainfall may trigger flash flooding in vulnerable areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Kashmir during the forecast period. Additionally, landslides are possible in the hilly regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, Murree, and Galliyat. Authorities have urged residents in these areas to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
Tourists and travelers have been advised to exercise extreme caution and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy snowfall and rainfall. The PMD also warned of isolated hailstorms in plain areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Islamabad, which could disrupt daily activities and damage crops.
Local administrations and disaster management authorities have been put on high alert to respond to any emergencies arising from the adverse weather conditions. Residents in affected regions are encouraged to stay updated with weather forecasts and follow official advisories to ensure their safety.
This weather system is expected to provide much-needed relief to drought-affected areas while also posing challenges for transportation and infrastructure in snow-prone regions. The Meteorological Office will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as the westerly wave progresses.
