Flash floods and landslides destroy 140 homes, cuts off Ghizer District
Ghizer River blockage isolates upper Ghizer, washing away key highway and suspending essential services as relief efforts intensify

At least 140 houses completely destroyed in the devastating flash flood in Taalidas, and the resultant lake formed on the Ghizer River, according to official reports.
According to details, 50 houses were burried under debris in Taalidas flood, while the lake submerged another 90 houses in six villages of Gupis after blocking the Ghizer River. Authorities reported that although 40% of the lake’s water has receded, nearly 60 percent remains, posing serious risks to downstream communities.
The flood and lake have also damaged properties and infrastructure, displacing families across the affected area.
A seven to eight-kilometre stretch of the Gilgit–Shandur Road has been washed away or inundated by debris and lake water, leaving upper Ghizer cut off for a third consecutive day.
Essential services, including drinking water and electricity, remain suspended, while the passengers are forced to walk 7–8 kilometres on foot because of road closures.
Local volunteers, Rescue 1122 personnel, and GB Scouts are working intensively on relief operations, delivering aid to displaced families and evacuating patients from blocked areas.
The Gupis–Yasin district administration has also begun work to restore an alternate road link, though officials estimate it may take four to five days to reopen.
