
The recent floods have claimed 9 lives and caused widespread destruction in parts of Gilgit-Baltistan.
According to a statement issued by the Gilgit Baltistan (GB) government spokesperson, Faizullah Firaq, on Friday that the recent flood disasters have severely impacted the province, resulting in the tragic loss of 9 lives. The statement said that 2 women and 2 children were among the deceased.
Authorities report that the number of missing persons may range from 10 to 12, as the situation remains dire.
It said the floods have wreaked havoc on infrastructure, with more than 500 houses and over 12 kilometres of roads destroyed.
In addition, 27 bridges and 22 vehicles have been swept away by the relentless floodwaters. Countless shops and cattle sheds have also been affected, alongside the loss of thousands of feet of building timber.
The government statement mentioned that Diamer district has reported the highest financial and human losses, with over a dozen individuals injured amidst the chaos. Rescue operations have seen more than 300 stranded passengers and tourists being safely evacuated, thanks to the active participation of the Pakistan Army and GB Scouts personnel.
Ongoing search operations are being hampered by continuing water flow and landslides, creating significant challenges for rescuers. The urgency to locate missing persons is paramount, as search teams face deteriorating conditions.
In response to the disaster, relief operations are currently underway, with efforts to restore water and electricity services beginning amidst the ongoing chaos. The provincial government is committed to supporting flood victims and assures that all possible aid will be provided to those affected by this natural calamity.
