Flash floods strike Gilgit-Baltistan again after Babusar top incident

Heavy machinery is being employed to restore closed highways

Fresh floodwaters have once again inundated several areas, including the provincial capital of Gilgit, as well as Skarkoi, Tangir, Thor nullah, and other parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, on Thursday.

The floods had hit the region’s Babusar area recently, where five tourists were killed and two others were injured.

Faizullah Firaq, spokesperson for the Gilgit-Baltistan government, told The Northern Post that the overwhelming floods in streams and rivers have affected the region yet again. He emphasised that landslides have occurred in the Tatta Pani area, blocking the Karakoram Highway for all types of traffic.

Mr. Firaq noted that adverse weather conditions were hampering search and relief operations. However, relief efforts have been intensified throughout the province following the Chief Minister’s visit to the flood-affected areas. The government spokesperson stated that food, medicine, and tents are being distributed to those in need.

“Heavy machinery is being deployed to restore the closed highways, and the government is committed to compensating those who have suffered losses,” Mr. Firaq asserted.

He also mentioned that the communication system on the Babusar Highway has been restored, and efforts are ongoing to establish water channels for agricultural fields, as well as to provide electricity and clean water to homes.
