Tourist killed in Swat by charged mob over Quran desecration

A man was killed by a mob over alleged desecration of the Holy Quran in the Madyan area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Swat district on Thursday night, police said.

Local residents reported that it was announced in the market that a man has desecrated the Holy Quran. The accused was handed over to the police, but the situation escalated when announcements were made from mosques and car loud speakers. An angry mob gathered and attacked the police station. They killed the man and set fire to the police station.
According to police officials, they also set fire to the mobile vehicle which burned down the police station and vehicles. Police fled the station and called the reinforcement to handle the unrest.

Reports indicate that the accused was a tourist from Punjab who was staying at a local hotel.
