Mansehra police arrest Jamat-e-Islami leader under PECA act

It is the first ever arrest in the PECA, in which the government made amendements recently

Mansehra police on Friday lodged a case under the Pakistan Electronic Crimes Act against a political party leader for addressing a rally on Kashmir Solidarity Day criticizing state institutions.

A first information report (FIR), which copy is available with The Northern Post, was registered on the complaint of Station House Officer, SHO, city police station, Amir Khan, which said a man identified as Shabir Ahmad, a local leader of the Jamat-I-Islami whose video of speech had gone viral on social media in which he had criticized the state institutions.

Following his video, the Mansehra police lodged an FIR against Shabir Ahmad under sections 506, 505, 153-A, 7ATA, 16MPO and Section 11 of PECA and taken the alleged accused into their custody who will be produced before the anti terrrorism court in Abottabad.

The PECA act was recently amended by the governemnt which was first enacted in 2016.

The jounalists and social society have been critisizing the amendment concerning that this act to be used for silencing the voices of rights, journalists exposing the government wrongdoings.
