Darra Adam Khel Coal Mine Accident Claims Two Shangla Workers Life

The coal mine victims, identified as Rehman Ali and Sarbali Khan, hailed from the Dherai and Puran areas of Shangla

Two coal mine workers from Shangla district lost their lives in a fatal accident in Darra Adam Khel. The victims, identified as Rehman Ali and Sarbali Khan, hailed from the Dherai and Puran areas of Shangla. Their bodies were transported to their native villages and laid to rest on Sunday, as the community mourned the loss of yet more lives to the perilous coal mining industry.

Local residents have expressed deep frustration with their elected representatives, accusing them of neglecting the urgent need for improved safety measures and alternative employment opportunities. “The elected members of the assembly from Shangla treat us unfairly, like stepchildren,” one resident told. “They engage in blame games and political accusations but fail to take practical steps to address the root causes of these tragedies.”

The lack of employment opportunities and widespread illiteracy in the region force many families to send their children into these hazardous mines, despite the known risks. “We have no other choice,” said another local. “There are no jobs, no education, and no future for our children outside of these mines.”

Residents also criticized officials for offering little more than emotional speeches and financial compensation to victims’ families, rather than implementing long-term solutions. “They deliver false consolations and provide some financial aid, then consider their duty done,” lamented a community member. “But what we need is real action—safer working conditions, better regulations, and alternative livelihoods to prevent these tragedies from recurring.”

This tragic incident highlights the ongoing dangers faced by miners in the region, where fatal accidents have become alarmingly frequent. Despite the rising death toll, the issue continues to be overlooked by authorities, leaving workers vulnerable and families devastated.
