Aatish, a tribute to Pakistan’s pottery heritage by Nabahat Lotia

Aatish ignites creativity PNCA showcases Nabahat Lotia’s mastery curated by Mariam Ahmed

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA), National Heritage & Culture Division, presented “Aatish”, a solo exhibition of ceramic works by eminent artist Nabahat Lotia, curated by Mariam Ahmed.

The exhibition was inaugurated by M. Ayub Jamali, Director General PNCA, on Tuesday, 11th November 2025, at Gallery No. 3, National Art Gallery, PNCA, Islamabad.

The exhibition showcased Nabahat Lotia’s lifelong engagement with clay and nature, reflecting over three decades of artistic exploration. With 18 solo exhibitions to her credit, the artist has collaborated closely with traditional potters across Pakistan to preserve and evolve local pottery practices. Her recent book, “Pottery Traditions of Pakistan,” chronicles this rich journey and underscores her commitment to safeguarding cultural heritage.

Speaking about the exhibition, Mariam Ahmed, Curator- Director Visual Arts Division, said, “Nabahat Lotia’s work is a testament to her dedication to her craft and her deep connection with nature. ‘Aatish’ is a celebration of the transformative power of art and the enduring legacy of Pakistan’s pottery traditions.”

Speaking about her creative process, Lotia remarked, “Nature is my inspiration, and my work has always been in harmony with it.” Aatish — meaning “fire” — celebrated the transformative power of flame in shaping clay into works of art, symbolizing endurance, change, and renewal.

In conjunction with the exhibition, PNCA will also host a Ceramic Workshop by Nabahat Lotia from 12th to 14th November 2025, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM at PNCA, Islamabad. The workshop will offer hands-on learning experiences, including kiln firing, and will provide all necessary materials for participants.

The exhibition “Aatish” will remain open to the public until 20th November 2025, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM (Saturday closed) at the National Art Gallery, PNCA, Islamabad.
