The investigation aims to identify those responsible for “spreading chaos and disorder through social media” and to prosecute them under the law

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad has summoned Muhammad Khalid Khurshid Khan, former chief minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, for questioning in connection with an ongoing investigation into alleged malicious social media campaigns.
According to an official notice issued by the IGP’s office, Khan is required to appear before the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) on March 18, 2025, at 12:00 PM at the Central Police Office, H-11, Islamabad. The JIT was formed under Section 30 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016, following a federal government notification (F.No.8/9/2024-FIA/Policy).
The investigation aims to identify those responsible for “spreading chaos and disorder through social media” and to prosecute them under the law. The notice states that there is sufficient material linking Khalid Khurshid to the case, either as an active participant or someone closely acquainted with the circumstances.
Khan has been directed to bring his original CNIC and any supporting evidence or documents to defend his position. Failure to comply may result in legal consequences under Section 174 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), 1860, for willful non-obedience of the order.
The development comes amid increasing scrutiny of social media activity in Pakistan, particularly in relation to political discourse and online campaigns.
