A lecturer, accused on charges of sexually harassing a female student, at the University of Malakand was taken into custody by the police, confirmed Additional Deputy Commissioner Lower Dir on Sunday.
According to the official, the student, who is enrolled in the Urdu department, filed a complaint accusing that the lecturer of Pakistan Studies had been harassing her for several months. She further claimed that the accused had attempted to abduct her from her home.
Following the complaint, the lecturer was taken into custody, and a case was registered against him under sections 354, 365B, and 506. The university administration immediately suspended the lecturer and forwarded the case to the harassment committee for departmental action.
Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur took notice of the incident and formed a high-level inquiry committee to investigate the allegations. The two-member committee comprises Additional Secretary Administration and AIG Establishment Central Police Office.
According to a notification issued by the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, the committee will visit the university, gather relevant facts, and record statements from all parties involved. The deputy commissioner and DPO of Lower Dir have been directed to provide administrative support to the investigation.
The committee is expected to submit its report within 15 days. The vice chancellor of Malakand University has been instructed to extend full cooperation to the probe team.
