Punjab makes EV chargers mandatory at all new petrol pumps

Move aims to tackle air pollution in cities like Lahore and overcome key barriers to electric vehicle adoption amid rising fuel costs

The Punjab Government has taken a historic step to promote green mobility, under which it is necessary for every petrol pump to install charging stations for electric vehicles. This step is taken to combat air pollution in Lahore, one of the world’s most polluted cities, and to promote the use of Electric Vehicles.

Due to the increasing prices of petroleum in Pakistan and deteriorating air index in urban centres of Punjab, the government is under pressure to adopt sustainable transport solutions. This decision aligns with the campaigns of Punjab for clean air and green energy, whose purpose is to reduce carbon emissions and support the transformation of electric mobility.
According to officials, under this policy, every new licensed petrol pump should have to include at least one EV charging unit in its infrastructure project. It aims to provide the public an easy access to EV chargers and to end the biggest hurdle of charging stations while buying electric vehicles.
A senior official of the Punjab Transport Department said, “The province cannot fight smog and rising fuel costs without transitioning to electric mobility. Mandatory EV chargers at fuel stations will make adoption easier for the public.”
Officials have announced the immediate implementation of the plan, which will include technical requirements, safety standards, and compliance deadlines.
This decision of Punjab follows the similar trends of the world, where governments are mandating EV infrastructure to accelerate green transportation. Experts believe this move could also attract EV manufacturers and investors to Pakistan, supporting the country’s broader climate and energy goals.
