Families displaced as floods wreak havoc in Gilgit Baltistan
Twenty homes severely damaged and livelihoods lost after a sudden flood; officials urge residents to avoid waterways
Twenty houses, along with trees and crops, were severely damaged during the flood on Thursday in Valley Daryal of District Diamer, Gilgit Baltistan.
According to Waseem Abbas, Assistant Commissioner Daryal, a flood occurred in the Gumari area at 6 am on Thursday morning, following heavy rainfall, which significantly affected the area and damaged 20 houses, with 5 of them completely destroyed.
Besides that, crops and trees were also damaged. The assistant commissioner said that there is a risk of flooding in other drains, but further investigation is underway.
According to locals, many people rushed to save their lives when the flood arrived, and dozens of others relocated to safer areas.
Locals also reported that the flood has severely impacted the water channel, and livestock and cattle have been affected as well.
Last night, heavy rainfall occurred in several areas of Gilgit Baltistan.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority has also instructed people not to approach Nullahs during rain and to avoid nearby hotels.
