Deteriorating bridge in Ghizar puts lives of people at risk

The bridge also attracts visitors who often pause to capture photos, unknowingly putting themselves in harm’s way

A critical bridge in Ghizar linking central Phander with nearby villages has partially collapsed into the river, endangering the thousands who rely on it daily. Despite persistent appeals from the community, the crumbling structure remains unrepaired, with locals fearing a catastrophic collapse could happen at any moment.

Situated in one of Gilgit-Baltistan’s most picturesque and tourist-frequented areas, the bridge also attracts visitors who often pause to capture photos, unknowingly putting themselves in harm’s way. Residents accuse both government officials and elected leaders of turning a blind eye to the deteriorating infrastructure.

“We need immediate action, not empty promises. If disaster strikes, the authorities will be solely responsible,” warned a frustrated local.

The community is urging the district administration and relevant departments to prioritize repairs or complete reconstruction of the bridge in Ghizar area before a tragedy occurs. They also highlight how such neglect damages Phander’s reputation as a serene getaway for nature-loving travelers.

In another report, the precarious condition of Rambo Bridge in Phasu, Gojal-Hunza, is at imminent risk of collapse due to rising water levels in the Hunza River.

Local communities urgently appeal to the district administration and higher authorities to immediately restrict all traffic movement on Rambo Bridge to prevent potential loss of life.
