Shandur Polo Festival kicks off with thrilling match, cultural showcase

Chitral’s Sarlaspur team triumphs over Gilgit-Baltistan in opening clash; KP officials highlight tourism promotion efforts

Shandur polo festival officially began with the joint coordination of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tourism Authority, Pakistan Army and Chitral Scouts. The inaugration cermony was graced by Barrister Saif, Advisor to the Cheif Minister on Information and Public Relations and Fakhar Zaman, Provincial Minister for Sports. Other notable officals included Tourism Secretary Bakhtiyar Khan, Malakand Deputy Comissioner, Abid Wazir and Director General of Tourism Authority, Habibullah Arif.

Barrister Saif highlighted in his address that “There are several breathtaking Tourism spots in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the provincial government is taking all comprehensive measures to promote tourism. Through international festivals like Shandur polo festival, we promote our cultural heritage and tourist places all over the world.”

The first day of festival featured a polo match competition between Chitral’s Sarlaspur Team and Gilgit-Baltistan’s Gadar Team, in which Sarlaspur defeated Gadar with a score of 6-3 and won the competition.

District administration Upper and Lower Chitral, local police and other organizations have provided full support to ensure the successful conduct of the festival. Authorities have emphasized that tourists will enjoy the scenic beauty of Shindur, but all necessary precautionary measures will remain on top priority.

The Shindur Polo Festival which has been held 30 times since 1982, will continue over the few days with more high-stakes polo matches and vibrant cultural events. Historically, Chitral has claimed victory 17 times, while Gilgit-Baltistan has won 13 times, setting the stage for another thrilling competition this year.
