Huawei launches Pura 80 series with revolutionary camera tech

Flagship smartphones feature switchable telephoto lenses, 1-inch sensors, and satellite connectivity

Huawei has officially unveiled its highly anticipated Pura 80 series, marking a major leap in smartphone imaging and performance. The lineup includes four models—Pura 80, Pura 80 Pro, Pura 80 Pro+, and Pura 80 Ultra—each pushing boundaries in camera technology, battery life, and AI-powered software.

Huawei Pura 80 Ultra: A Camera Revolution

The standout model, the Pura 80 Ultra, introduces a groundbreaking dual-field periscope telephoto system—a first in the smartphone industry. Instead of using multiple sensors, Huawei employs a single 50MP 1/1.28-inch sensor paired with two switchable lenses (3.7x and 9.4x optical zoom). A mechanical prism shifts between the lenses, allowing seamless transitions without compromising image quality.

The main camera features a 1-inch RYYB sensor with a variable aperture (f/1.6-f/4.0) and 16EV dynamic range, claimed to be the highest in any smartphone. Additionally, the Ultra includes a 40MP ultra-wide lens and a 1.5MP spectral sensor for enhanced color accuracy.

Performance & Battery: Flagship-Grade Specs

The Pura 80 Ultra is powered by Huawei’s Kirin 9020 chipset, featuring a Taishan core architecture (1x 2.5GHz, 3x 2.15GHz, 4x 1.6GHz) and a Maleoon 920 GPU. It comes with 16GB RAM and up to 1TB storage.

A 5,700mAh battery supports 100W wired and 80W wireless charging, ensuring rapid power-ups. The device also includes a USB 3.1 Gen 1 port, a step up from the standard model’s USB 2.0.

HarmonyOS 5.1: AI-Powered Upgrades

All Pura 80 models run HarmonyOS 5.1, bringing significant camera and AI enhancements:

  • New Nightography Modes: “Chasing the Moon,” “Starry Sky Portrait,” and improved low-light photography.

  • AI Photo Editing: Magic Image Shift for object repositioning and anti-reflection tools.

  • Upgraded Celia AI: Real-time voice/video assistant with contextual responses (weather, travel, food recommendations).

  • New Themes: Interactive “Dancing Master” and anime-style “Dimension Crossing” wallpapers.

Pricing & Availability

  • Pura 80 Pro: Starts at ¥6,499 ≈ PKR 252,000 for 12GB+256GB.

  • Pura 80 Pro+: Starts at ¥8,000 ≈ PKR 310,000 for 16GB+512GB.

  • Pura 80 Ultra: ¥9,999 ≈ PKR 387,000 for 16GB+512GB,  ¥10,999 ≈ PKR 426,000 for 1TB.

The standard Pura 80 (pricing TBA) launches in July, while global availability is expected soon.

Huawei’s Comeback

Despite U.S. sanctions, Huawei has regained momentum in China, ranking #2 in market share (16.6%) in 2024 (IDC). The Pura 80 series signals Huawei’s ambition to compete with Apple’s iPhone 16 and Samsung’s Galaxy S25 in the high-end segment, leveraging its in-house Kirin chips and HarmonyOS ecosystem.

With cutting-edge camera tech, long battery life, and AI-driven software, the Pura 80 series solidifies Huawei’s position as an innovator in premium smartphones.
