Pakistan’s olive oil earns global honor, but real story lies in soil

Decades of farmer training, Italian partnership, and policy vision turn arid land into award-winning exports

In a quiet shift that’s now making global noise, Pakistan’s locally produced olive oil has claimed international recognition — and with it, the emergence of an agricultural success story years in the making.
At a recent global olive oil competition, Pakistan earned a coveted international award for quality — an achievement that marks not only a win for the product but a turning point for the country’s olive sector. For the first time, international panels are tasting the story of rural resilience, strategic investment, and silent partnerships hidden behind every bottle.

A Seed Planted in Vision

This milestone did not arrive overnight. It is the result of a decade-long transformation led by the Government of Pakistan — turning arid hillsides into cultivable land, training thousands of farmers in modern practices, and establishing the infrastructure needed to compete on the global stage.
Today, olive groves stretch across Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and Gilgit-Baltistan — a vision that was once considered ambitious, now producing world-class oil.

Italy’s Support: A Quiet Backbone

Behind this growth lies an international partnership that has remained consistent, though often understated. The Government of Italy — through its development initiatives — and technical partner CIHEAM Bari have played an instrumental role in shaping Pakistan’s olive ecosystem. From providing pruning tools to building farmer capacity, their role has been to empower, not overtake — a model of cooperation often missing in development work.
The project trained thousands of local farmers in soil management, harvesting techniques, and post-processing quality control. The results speak for themselves — not just in taste, but in livelihood generation and sectoral credibility.

The Voice from the Fields

The message from the local farmers is very simple and has taken the stage with power: “We were trained. We believed. And today, our oil is winning medals.”
These testimonials are not just emotional appeals — they are evidence of effective policy, real grassroots investment, and the possibility of scalable agricultural success in Pakistan.

A National Moment

While the award is a reason to celebrate, stakeholders are quick to point out that this is just the beginning. Industry experts emphasize the need to push further — expanding production, integrating technology, and building strong export channels for Pakistani olive oil.
But the foundation is solid. And perhaps for the first time in decades, a farming story is unfolding in Pakistan where the headlines read not of crisis, but of capacity.
The olive oil sector may not yet be mainstream, but it is undeniably rising — drop by golden drop.
