Pakistan braces for heavy rain and storms ahead of Eid-ul-Azha

PMD warns of hailstorms, flash rains in key regions from May 27–31; farmers and travelers alerted

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather alert predicting heavy rain, windstorms, and potential hailstorms across upper and central regions of the country from May 27 to May 31. The forecast comes as moist currents enter upper and central Pakistan, while a westerly wave is expected to impact northern areas starting May 28, creating conditions for active weather patterns.

Major cities including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Peshawar, and Murree are likely to experience intermittent heavy rains accompanied by strong winds and possible hailstorms. The twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi may see temperatures ranging between 34°C to 37°C during this period, with similar conditions expected in other affected regions. Provincial capitals such as Lahore and Faisalabad in Punjab, as well as Swat and Abbottabad in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, have also been included in the weather advisory.

Authorities have warned of potential damage to vulnerable infrastructure, including electric poles, trees, and solar panels, particularly in exposed areas. Farmers have been advised to adjust their schedules accordingly to protect crops and livestock, while travelers and tourists are urged to exercise caution during the inclement weather. Emergency services have been put on alert, and the public has been advised to stay updated on weather developments.

Meanwhile, southern parts of the country, including Sindh and parts of Balochistan, are expected to remain hot and dry, with coastal areas potentially experiencing dusty winds. The weather system arrives just ahead of Eid-ul-Azha celebrations, raising concerns about its impact on cattle markets and holiday travel plans. The PMD has directed all relevant authorities to take preventive measures to minimize disruptions and ensure public safety during the forecasted severe weather conditions.
