Punjab declares emergency after Indian missile strikes, security on high alert

Hospitals, schools, and civil defense mobilized as Pakistan responds to aggression

In response to India’s missile attacks on multiple Pakistani cities, the Punjab government has declared a state of emergency and implemented stringent security measures. An emergency meeting chaired by Punjab Home Secretary Noorul Amin Mengal reviewed provincial preparedness under the federal government’s “War Book” directives, leading to heightened security deployments across critical infrastructure.

All hospitals in Punjab have been placed on emergency footing, with medical staff ordered to remain on duty, while leaves for doctors and healthcare workers have been cancelled. The Civil Defence Department has activated all resources, and a central control room has been established at the Punjab Home Department for real-time monitoring.

As a precaution, educational institutions across the province have been closed for May 7, with examinations postponed. Authorities have also readied public shelters and activated early warning systems to ensure public safety.

The measures follow India’s overnight missile strikes on cities including Bahawalpur, Muridke, Muzaffarabad, and Kotli. According to DG ISPR Lt. Gen. Ahmed Sharif, 24 Indian strikes targeted civilian areas, killing eight Pakistanis and injuring 35. Pakistan’s military retaliated strongly, shooting down six Indian jets—including advanced Rafale aircraft—and destroying a brigade headquarters. Reports indicate Indian troops at the Chora Complex (LoC) raised white flags in surrender.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz condemned the attacks, vowing that Pakistan would respond decisively. “Protecting every inch of Pakistan is part of our faith,” she declared, invoking the nation’s resilience. Meanwhile, district administrations and law enforcement agencies remain on high alert, with efforts focused on maintaining emergency services and communication networks. The federal government, including PM Shehbaz Sharif, has sought international support to de-escalate tensions as the situation remains volatile.
