NADRA implements stricter ID card rules to combat fraud

Original documents now mandatory as authority bans unnecessary photocopies to prevent identity theft

The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has introduced sweeping changes to its documentation procedures, eliminating the requirement for photocopies during CNIC applications and other services. Citizens must now present only original documents for processes like B-Forms and registration certificates, as part of enhanced anti-fraud measures. The authority has explicitly warned that using another person’s CNIC as reference carries no legal validity, with updated guidelines prominently displayed at all NADRA centers nationwide.

In a critical security advisory, NADRA alerted citizens about sophisticated scams where fraudsters posing as officials collect CNIC details through fake prize schemes. The authority emphasized that sharing photocopies or using CNICs as collateral leaves individuals vulnerable to financial fraud and illegal registrations. Recent years have seen a sharp rise in such cases, prompting NADRA’s preventive campaign. Key recommendations include carrying originals only, refusing informal data requests, and immediately reporting suspicious approaches to authorities.

The reforms aim to simultaneously streamline services and bolster data protection in an era of increasing digital security threats. By reducing unnecessary paperwork and public exposure of sensitive information, NADRA expects to significantly decrease identity theft incidents while maintaining efficient citizen services. Officials confirm these changes are permanent and will be strictly enforced across all NADRA operations.
