The Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) has postponed the annual intermediate examinations for 2025, originally scheduled to begin on April 28, to May 5. The decision comes amid ongoing delays in awarding grace marks to first-year students who failed their 2024 exams and a shortage of available examination centers due to overlapping matriculation exams.
The Sindh government has approved 15% to 20% grace marks in key science subjects—Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry—for intermediate students following widespread protests over discrepancies in their results. Many students who performed well in their matriculation exams saw a sharp decline in their first-year scores, prompting demands for re-evaluation.
Meanwhile, Karachi’s education system faces renewed scrutiny after yet another exam paper leak—this time the Chemistry paper—surfaced on WhatsApp just 15 minutes before the test. This follows a pattern of recurring leaks, including a similar incident in 2015, raising concerns over the board’s ability to maintain exam integrity.
With over 375,000 students appearing for matric exams across 499 centers, BIEK has assured that a revised timetable will be issued soon. The board has advised students and parents to stay updated via its official website and social media channels.
The delay also stems from the unavailability of examination centers, as many are still occupied for ongoing matric exams, which began on April 8 and will continue until May 8. Currently, BIEK operates without a permanent chairman, with the Karachi Matriculation Board’s chief serving as interim head.
