The Indian film industry has lost one of its most iconic figures as veteran actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar breathed his last in Mumbai today. The 87-year-old legend, known for his patriotic roles in timeless classics like UpkaarPurab Aur Paschim, and Kranti, passed away at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in the early hours of Friday. According to the medical report, the primary cause of death was heart-related complications, with decompensated liver cirrhosis as a contributing factor.

A Life Dedicated to Cinema and Patriotism

Born as Harikrishan Goswami in Abbottabad (now in Pakistan) in 1937, Manoj Kumar began his acting career in 1957 with the film Fashion. However, it was his breakthrough role in Kanch Ki Gudiya (1961) that set the stage for his illustrious journey in Bollywood. His portrayal of revolutionary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh in Shaheed (1965) cemented his reputation as an actor who could embody nationalistic fervor on screen.

The 1960s and 70s saw Kumar at the peak of his career, delivering powerful performances in films like Upkaar (1967), Purab Aur Paschim (1970), and Roti Kapada Aur Makaan (1974). His ability to weave social messages with entertainment earned him the affectionate title of ‘Bharat Kumar’—a symbol of Indian pride. Not just an actor, he also ventured into direction with critically acclaimed films like Shor (1972) and Kranti (1981), leaving an indelible mark on Indian cinema.

Manoj Kumar’s contributions to Indian cinema were recognized with numerous prestigious awards. He received the Padma Shri in 1992, the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999, and the highest cinematic honor, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, in 2015. His 1974 directorial venture, Roti Kapada Aur Makaan, won him the Filmfare Award for Best Director, further solidifying his legacy as a multifaceted talent.

Nation Mourns a Cinematic Legend

The news of his demise prompted an outpouring of grief from political leaders, film personalities, and fans across the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid heartfelt tributes on X (formerly Twitter), recalling Kumar’s unparalleled contribution to Indian cinema. “Deeply saddened by the passing of legendary actor and filmmaker Shri Manoj Kumar Ji. He was an icon of Indian cinema, remembered for his patriotic zeal. His works ignited national pride and will continue to inspire generations,” PM Modi wrote.

Union Minister Rajnath Singh described him as “a versatile actor whose films enriched Indian culture.” Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri remarked, “Patriots and artists like him never die,” while actor Anupam Kher and other industry veterans shared emotional tributes, calling his death an “irreparable loss.”

Final Journey and Family’s Statement

Manoj Kumar’s son, Kunal Goswami, confirmed that the actor had been battling age-related health issues for a long time. “It was God’s grace that he left us peacefully. His cremation will take place tomorrow morning,” he told. The family, though grieving, expressed gratitude for the love and respect showered upon the late actor.
