The Balochistan government has dispatched rescue teams after reports of intense firing on the Jaffar Express, a Peshawar-bound passenger train from Quetta, near Bolan district on Tuesday. The train, carrying nearly 500 passengers, was attacked by armed men who stopped it inside Tunnel No. 8. Details about casualties and the extent of the attack remain unclear as authorities have not yet shared specific information.
Balochistan government spokesperson Shahid Rind confirmed the incident, stating that the train was targeted between Pehro Kunri and Gadalar. Controller Railways Muhammad Kashif said the train has nine coaches and around 500 passengers on board. Efforts are underway to contact the passengers and staff, but the remote and rocky terrain is making rescue operations difficult.
District Police Officer Rana Muhammad Dilawar of Kachhi Bolan reported that the train is stuck near a mountain tunnel, and security has been increased on the N-65 Highway. Security forces have also engaged in an exchange of fire with militants in the area after an explosion was heard near the tunnel.
An emergency has been declared at Sibi Hospital, and ambulances and security forces are en route to the site. The railway department has sent additional trains to assist in the rescue operation. The Balochistan government has ordered emergency measures, with all institutions on high alert to address the situation.
Officials have urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading rumors. Meanwhile, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the attack, calling the perpetrators “beasts” who do not deserve any concessions. He also prayed for the recovery of those injured in the firing.
The situation remains tense as security forces work to rescue the hostages and neutralize the threat. Further updates are expected as the operation progresses.
