Dialogue on Pro-Women Laws held in Gilgit to mark International Women’s Day

The interactive session allowed participants to engage directly with the panelists, leading to insightful discussions on potential solutions and the way forward

A high-level dialogue on “Accelerating Implementation of Pro-Women Laws in Gilgit-Baltistan” was organized by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) Gilgit office at the Gilgit Press Club in commemoration of International Women’s Day. The event brought together key stakeholders, including university students, media representatives, lawyers, civil society organizations, lawmakers, human rights defenders, and government officials.
The panel featured prominent voices advocating for women’s rights, including Ms. Kulsoom Farman, Chairperson of the Women’s Caucus and Member of the GB Assembly; Ms. Sosan Aziz, Gender and Development Expert from the Aga Khan Rural Support Programme (AKRSP); Ms. Ruqia, Member of the National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW); Ms. Ishrat, a representative of the Women’s Rights Movement and civil society; Ms. Manahil, ASP GB Police; Ms. Shahana Shah, a writer and women’s rights activist; Ms. Shabana Barkat, a women’s rights advocate; Ms. Tasneem, representing the Women with Disabilities Rights Organization; and Mr. Yasir from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Cyber Crime Response Wing.
Moderated by Mr. Israruddin Israr, Regional Coordinator of HRCP GB, the discussion centered on the challenges hindering the effective implementation of pro-women laws in the region. Panelists highlighted key barriers, including entrenched cultural norms, societal attitudes, institutional inefficiencies, a lack of capacity and sensitization among service providers, and weak political will.
The interactive session allowed participants to engage directly with the panelists, leading to insightful discussions on potential solutions and the way forward. The event marked a significant step in uniting diverse stakeholders to push for more effective enforcement of laws that protect and empower women in Gilgit-Baltistan.
By fostering dialogue and collaboration, the initiative aimed to accelerate progress toward a more just and equitable society for women in the region.
